      · Travel Guide

Whether you're a local looking for a quick getaway or a traveler visiting the province, camping is a great way to experience the beautiful nature that Manitoba has to offer. From parks with hundreds of campsites to hidden gems, we've got you covered. In this blog, we'll be sharing our top picks for campgrounds within a short drive out of Winnipeg. Keep in mind that most of these campgrounds are seasonal so be on the lookout for when they open (typically late March or early May). Bookings tend to fill up quick so plot your adventure early! So pack your bags, grab your camping gear, and let's explore the great outdoors of Manitoba together!

      Birds Hill Provincial Park Campground

Approximately 30 Minutes Drive from Winnipeg

Birds Hill Provincial Park is a top choice among Winnipeg residents due to its proximity to the city. The park is located only a half hour drive north of Winnipeg and offers nearly 500 campsites, making it one of the largest camping sites in Manitoba. The camping options include unserviced, electrical serviced, and fully serviced sites with water, electricity, and even sewer. The park also offers a variety of activities, including biking and hiking trails, as well as a lake for swimming and cooling off. It's important to note that while aurora season in Manitoba typically falls during the winter, Birds Hill is still considered a great location to chase auroras while getting away from Winnipeg's light pollution.

      Rock Garden Campground

Approximately 50 Minutes Drive from Winnipeg

Rock Garden Campground is a family-owned and operated camping destination located in Richer, Manitoba, Canada. It is situated just under an hour east of Winnipeg along Trans Canada Highway #1 and just one minute north of the village of Richer on Provincial Road #302. The campground offers hot showers, modern washrooms and laundromat facilities for the comfort of its guests. All the campsites are equipped with water and electrical hook-ups, and some also have sewer capabilities. The sites are spacious enough to accommodate for larger RVs.

      Grand Beach Campground

Approximately One Hour & Fifteen Minutes Drive from Winnipeg

Grand Beach Campground is the perfect option for those looking to camp on Lake Winnipeg. It is set near one of the provinces best known beaches, Grand Beach, and is one of the oldest organized campgrounds in the province. Offering a variety of amenities including a beautiful beach, nearby bird-watching opportunities, a boat launch, electric campsites, hiking trails, a full wheelchair accessible interpretive program, pull-through RV sites, and unserviced camping options, all within a provincial park facility that has earned the prestigious Blue Flag Award for its watercraft recreation and responsible sewage disposal.

      St. Malo Provincial Park

Approximately One Hour Drive from Winnipeg

Located approximately 60 kilometers south of Winnipeg, St. Malo Provincial Park is a hidden gem in southern Manitoba. This park is less popular than Birds Hill Park, but still a great campground option. The park offers a cozy and peaceful atmosphere with a variety of camping options including unserviced and electricity serviced sites. One of the highlights of this park is the lake and its beautiful stretch of sandy beach, making it a perfect getaway spot during a hot summer weekend. Both the campsites and the beach area are equipped with bathrooms and showers, and there is also a picnic site with cooking shelters and shaded tables.

      Brereton Lake Campground

Approximately One Hour & Fourty Minutes Drive from Winnipeg

The campground is located near the shore of Brereton Lake and is the first lake you'll encounter as you enter the large and picturesque Whiteshell Provincial Park. However, please note that the campground is small with only 30 campsites available, so it is important to book ahead. The Brereton Lake Resort is conveniently located across the road for those looking for amenities, groceries or a place to eat.

Camping in Manitoba is a must experience for nature enthusiasts. Whether you're looking for a popular park with hundreds of campsites or a hidden gem, there is something for everyone. Whether you're a local looking for a quick getaway or a traveler visiting the province, these camping sites are a great way to experience the beautiful nature that Manitoba has to offer. We hope this post has helped you to plan your next camping adventure near Winnipeg and that you will enjoy your time exploring the great outdoors! Remember to book your campsite in advance and to always follow Leave No Trace principles to ensure the preservation of these beautiful places for future generations to enjoy. Happy camping!
